Cover-up: Weyerhauser Research and Development Hazardous Waste Disposal

Hazardous Waste Disposal Management System (WDMS) OVERVIEW.
Date: December 13, 1993

This is an overview of an attempt to destroy corporation records related to the handling, processing and shipping of hazardous waste at the Weyerhauser Research and Development building in Federal Way, Washington.

The author of this overview prevented the destruction of the computerized database containing the hazardous waste information, presented this information to corporate management and presented this information to federal authorities. It was not long after that the author left Weyerhaeuser as his employer out of fear of retaliation from Weyerhaeuser Corporation.

December 15, 1992, Met with Richard Custer, Allan Sutton, Chuck Bradley, Terry Adams, MJ Wagner to discuss the budget and schedule for enhancements to the Waste Disposal Mgmt System (WDMS).

January xx, 1993, The Chemical Mgmt Unit was reorganized and removed from Bill Fuller's Mgmt and placed under Chuck Gibson's Mgmt.

January xx, 1993, Richard Custer was relieved of his duties in supervising the Chemical Waste Shed located in the WTC Service Yard. No explanation was given for his sudden disappearance.

January 19, 1993, Met with Chuck Gibson, Randy Cunningham, Terry Adams, re: Purpose of meeting was to brief Chuck on our perception of WDMS, what it does, and why it was of benefit to the company.

June, 23, 1993, Met with John Lorentzen, Jayasri Guha and Chuck Gibson. Subject: Next Steps, Chem Mgmt.

July 7, 1993 I received a Weyerhaeuser Interoffice Communication from Allan Sutton stating that the WASTE VAX Account files had been archived and requested that I provide a list of files to be deleted. The WDMS application was no longer useful.

July 12, 1993 I received a Microsoft Mail message from Allan Sutton saying that Chuck Gibson advised him that they did not want to retain the archived information for any specific time period -- that it was ok for it to become inaccessable due to upgrades in the database software.

July 27, 1993 I received a Microsoft Mail message from Chuck Gibson saying "We need to be sure all of the data in the MS system has been erased. Has this been done? If not what will it take to it and how much will it cost? Can we do it?"Chuck Bradley and Allan Sutton were copied.

July 28, 1993 I submitted a Weyerhaeuser Interoffice Communication to Charlotte Taylor starting the Invention Release Process for the WDMS application.

September 22, 1993 I received a voice mail message from Charlotte Taylor starting the Invention Release Process for the WDMS application was complete and that the application would be retained by Weyerhaeuser. I forwarded that message to Forward Charlotte Taylor's voice mail re: WDMS to Terry Adams, MJ Wagner, Jim Suckow, Chuck Gibson 6407, Gloria Alexander 6742, John Lorentzen 6472, Allan Sutton 6197, Chuck Bradley 6225, Mick McCourt 6513, Judy Williams 6240, David Farris 636-7079. (I never received any acknowledgement or comment from Chuck Gibson, Alan Sutton or Chuck Bradley.)

September 23, 1993 I received a Weyerhaeuser Interoffice Communication from Charlotte Taylor starting the Invention Release Process for the WDMS application was complete and that the application would be retained by Weyerhaeuser.

October 1, 1993 John Lorentzen told me that our organization, CITA, would take possession of the WDMS application.

November 11 - 15, 1993, Chris Olson told me on the phone that she was in the process of deleting WDMS files on the WASTE account and discovered by talking with Operations that a backup tape had not been requested and did not exist. She said that the WDMS data needed to be erased because the data entered during the time that Richard Custer was here was wrong.

December 1, 1993 Talked with John Lorentzen, re: WDMS data retention and new CHEM_MGT VAX Acct. John asked me to write a memo to him and he would take it to Judd Haverfield and Jayasri Guha for their action. John said that this would take me out of the responsibility of deciding how to handle this issue.

December 9, 1993 The data files from the WASTE Account were restored to the CHEM_MGT Account from a backup tape created on July xx, 1993. The WDMS data files were not on that tape, so I copied the data files from the WASTE Account database disk to the CHEM_MGT account. All files on the WASTE Account default disk had been erased except for the Login.com and Mail files.
